MARTIN TAYLOR's Spirit Of Django Martin Taylor first came to prominence in the late 70's through his musical collaborations with violin legend Stephane Grappelli. Since then he has gone on to establish a highly successful career in his own right as a solo performer, and is currently the biggest selling Jazz Recording Artist in Britain. The American magazine Acoustic GuitarTM recently described Martin Taylor as "THE acoustic guitarist of his generation" and being voted "Best Guitarist" in the British Jazz Awards for the seventh year running. Other awards have come from numerous guitar magazines around the world, and this year he was given the Freedom of the City of London in recognition for his outstanding contribution to music. In 1994 he formed his group SPIRIT OF DJANGO to re-explore his musical roots in Gypsy Jazz. The group has been one of the great success stories of recent years after their first album reached Number 1 in the U.K. Jazz Charts for six weeks. Their version of Robert Palmers' "Johnny & Mary" has become familiar to everyone across Europe as the theme for the Nicole-Papa T.V. commercials, and they were voted Best Small Group in the 1997 British Jazz Awards. Their latest album Celebrating Grappelli - which features Stephane Grappelli on six of the tracks, is currently enjoying great success in America where it has been at the top of the Gavin Jazz Charts for over a month while being the most played jazz record on U.S. radio.
